Beautiful DIY Succulent Pumpkin – Home and Darlings

Spread the love

It’s that time of year again…crisp mornings, bonfires at night and pumpkin everything. This DIY succulent pumpkin is sure to get you in the autumn mood. And it’s easier than pumpkin pie!

Supplies for the Beautiful DIY Succulent Pumpkin:

  • A flat topped pumpkin (The round/oblong pumpkins don’t work as well.)
  • One medium sized succulent plant and two small ones, preferably with “babies” (the tiny succulents attached)
  • Sphagnum moss like this one
  • Oasis Floral Adhesive (Formulated for use with fresh flowers)
  • Clippers (or sharp scissors)
  • Optional: Wood flowers like these or found in your local craft store. My piece has two.
  • Optional: Clippings from any trailing plant if you’d like to add a “trail” or two.
  • Cardboard – You’ll need it to work on to protect surfaces, particularly if you’re using the Oasis Floral Adhesive. Additionally, the adhesive will not come off of your clothing, so wear your old comfies.
  • A spray bottle to water your succulents once per week. (Don’t saturate, as excess water will create rot. It doesn’t need much.)

Step 1 – Beautiful DIY Succulent Pumpkin:

First, adhere your moss to the top of the pumpkin. If you’re using the floral adhesive put some on both the pumpkin and the bottom of the moss.

Step 2:

Next, you’ll use your clippers to clip the succulent plants from their roots and soil. Clip as close to the flower head as possible, without clipping the bottom of the flower.

**NOTE: It’s important to remove all soil AND any brown leaves from the flower in order to avoid rot.

Step 3:

Next, you create! Lay the succulents and wood flowers in the positions you like. Then pick up each one just a little, and apply the glue. I did use the Oasis Floral Adhesive since it’s fast-drying, waterproof and formulated for use with fresh flowers.

Step 4:

Water your succulents once per week, being sure not to oversaturate. Too much water will create rot.

Lightly spray your succulent pumpkin and it will likely last for months! Last year I made mine in September and it lasted until I was ready to decorate for the holidays! πŸ™‚

I created my succulent pumpkin at A Garden Party (https://www.agardenpartyllc.com/), which is a BEAUTIFUL florist and gift shop not far from me in south Jersey. Definitely going back there! We created our pumpkins under the trees, while we enjoyed wine and cheese. #perfect

Outside at A Garden Party, where we created our succulent pumpkins. BEAUTIFUL evening!

Couldn’t resist getting a few goodies inside…
