Honest Review of the Samsung Gas Range, 5.8 cu ft

Spread the love

This is my honest review of the Samsung 5.8 cu ft freestanding gas range, model No.NX58M6630SS. There are things that I love about this range and there are things that baffle me. Let’s review…

Aesthetics of this Samsung Gas Range:

First, let’s talk aesthetics: I think it’s a good looking range. I chose the stainless steel color and I like that the knobs have a touch of red. The range has a good amount of stainless steel too, which I like. (Some ranges are “stainless steel”, but are mainly black.) Having five burners is also a plus. Though, if truth be told, I’m not sure I’ve ever used the fifth! lol But I like the way it looks. It doesn’t come with a griddle, which was a bummer. However, I found a griddle online that will work for this range. There is a blue light which lights up when the knob is turned on. This is a really great feature. Not only does the blue light look pretty cool, but it’s a fantastic safety feature. If the stovetop is on, the blue light will shine and it’s even visible from far away.

Slide-in or Freestanding Samsung Gas Range?

I went back and forth between the idea of a slide-in range (the kind that sits flat, with no back, upper portion) and the more standard, freestanding range. I liked the looks of the slide-in, in theory and on TV. However, it seemed every time I saw one in an average home, it didn’t seem to fit. Maybe it was just that the kitchens I was in needed help, idk. Yet, I couldn’t shake the fact that I wasn’t crazy about the slide-in ranges I saw in the average homes I visited. I was going for more of a soft, farmhouse, cottagey feel in my kitchen and it seemed to me that those beautiful slide-in ranges felt a bit more commercial than what I was looking for. Freestanding range it was.

If you’re wondering about the awesome plaid rug runner in this pic, its’s the Dress Stewart Tartan, by Ruggable. I got the 10 foot runner and I LOVE IT!!

No doubt, anything I bought would have been leaps and bounds better than what was there. Here’s my 30 year old range of days gone by:

The only thing that range had going for it was that it did still work. Too bad, since we have a home warranty policy that may have replaced it if it ever died. But it just.wouldn’t.die. :/

What about function?

We’ve had our new Samsung range for over a year now and have had no issues. It works well. You can choose between the convection or the standard setting. The convection setting will definitely speed things up, so you need to account for that.

What I DON’T like about this Samsung gas range:

The timer. This timer is what baffles me. It is QUIET and then it STOPS. ?! LOL What? Have you ever heard of a timer that is so low you may not hear it if you’re in another room, then also shuts off after a few minutes? I don’t get it. What’s the purpose of the timer if *many* people will have a hard time hearing it and then it shuts off? You may appreciate this feature if you’ve got little ones still napping, but mine are past that phase. I have no hearing issues, but this is tough to hear unless you happen to be in the kitchen. My husband does have hearing issues, so it’s concerning at times.

In short, here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Aesthetics – There’s a good amount of stainless steel on this unit; a touch of red on the knobs; cool looking blue light behind the knobs when on which is also an excellent safety feature; the five burners look nice; digital display is pleasing
  • Functionality of the stovetop and oven is solid; convection setting will make your cooking go much quicker (adjustments need to be made there).
  • Self-cleaning mode seems to work, though I’ve only used it once.
  • Price – will vary according to time of year and where you purchase, but this unit is typically sold for a very good price, comparably.

Cons:

  • Timer – it’s FAR too quiet and I’m not the only reviewer to say so. Also, it turns off after a handful of minutes. A timer shouldn’t turn off until you shut it off, especially when talking about fire. This can be downright dangerous, imo.
  • No griddle for the 5th burner (though you can purchase online).

Things to know:

If you happen to have propane as your energy source (like we do), instead of gas, the store will deliver the range only and won’t connect. You will need to bring in another professional. There are different settings which need to be set for the propane. If this is not done properly, the flames from your burner will be very dangerously high. Hopefully, the store consultant will ask you if you’ve got propane and explain this if you do.

Additionally, it is required that you purchase a new connection kit when you buy a new gas range. They will not connect if you don’t have that new kit.

CONCLUSION: Would I choose the Samsung 5.8 cu ft Freestanding Gas Range again?

While the timer issue bothers me, I’d choose this range again. We’ve made adjustments for the timer when we think it may be an issue, like setting the timer on the Google Home or on our phones. Since the appliance is really well priced, and I appreciate the aesthetics, I’d buy it again.
